Common LG codes and safe first responses
Photograph the display and note the cycle stage. Some displays distinguish uppercase UE from lowercase uE, while others cannot show the distinction clearly. Include the model number so the technician can use the correct service information.
| Code | Common meaning and safe response |
|---|---|
| OE | Often means the washer has not drained as expected. Stop the cycle, check only visible hose kinks and manual-approved filter steps, and do not force the door open. |
| UE or uE | Often relates to an unbalanced load or an inability to balance it. If there is no standing water and the drum is safely unlocked, redistribute items loosely. |
| IE | Often relates to water not entering as expected. Check that other household taps work and that accessible washer supply valves are open only if you can do so without moving the machine. |
| LE | Often relates to a motor or locked-motor condition on many models. Stop repeated attempts and arrange diagnosis rather than testing internal wiring or parts. |
For OE, avoid flooding and forced entry
Press cancel or stop and observe whether the washer attempts to drain. Do not open a locked door or lid, tilt the machine, or remove a pump filter while the drum is full unless your exact manual provides a safe procedure for that condition.
Look for a visible kink in the drain hose without moving the washer and note whether a household standpipe or sink is also backing up. Persistent OE codes, grinding sounds, or leaks warrant professional diagnosis.
For UE or uE, separate a load issue from repeated balance failure
Mixed fabric weights and a single bulky item can shift during spinning. If the washer is stopped, unlocked, and contains no standing water, redistribute the load according to the manual. Avoid adding more items simply to force a different balance.
If reasonable loads repeatedly produce the code, or the drum moves excessively, bangs, or the machine walks across the floor, stop using it. Suspension, leveling, drum, motor, or control problems may need assessment. Do not reach underneath or attempt to level a moving washer.
For IE and LE, respect water and motor-system limits
For IE, check whether the home has water and whether a cycle or inlet hose is visibly kinked without pulling out the washer. Do not dismantle inlet screens or hoses while pressurized, and do not keep running the washer if water is leaking.
For LE, avoid repeated restart attempts and do not open the cabinet to inspect the motor. Motor, wiring, sensor, and control issues can require electrical testing. Stop immediately for smoke or a burning odor and unplug only if the plug is safely accessible and dry.
Give the technician a complete code history
Share the full model number, exact code, selected cycle, load type, whether the drum contains water, and whether the problem has happened before. This information helps distinguish a one-time loading condition from a recurring machine fault.
