Where to Find an Appliance Model and Serial Number

The model and serial numbers identify the appliance much more precisely than the brand and product family. They help a technician look up the correct wiring information, service procedures, and compatible parts.

Look for a manufacturer rating plate or data label in the common locations below. Locations vary, so use the owner manual when possible and never move or dismantle an appliance just to find a label.

Capture the complete label safely

Use your phone to take a clear, straight-on photo with the appliance off and the area dry. Include the brand, model, serial, and any additional model revision or type code printed on the same label. Similar-looking characters such as 0 and O or 1 and I are easy to confuse when copying by hand.

The model on a purchase receipt may be shortened, and a decorative name on the door is often only a product family. Use the rating plate when it is accessible. Do not peel off the label or clean it with abrasive products.

Common rating-plate locations by appliance

Open only normal user doors, lids, drawers, and removable storage bins that are designed to come out. These are starting points, not guaranteed locations for every model.

Where manufacturers commonly place appliance data labels
AppliancePlaces to check without disassembly
RefrigeratorAlong an interior side wall or ceiling, near the crisper area, or behind a user-removable drawer or kick plate only if the manual permits.
WasherAround the lid or door opening, on the rear of the lid, or on an accessible cabinet edge visible when the door is open.
DryerAround the door opening, inside the door, or on an accessible cabinet edge; do not tip or pull out the dryer.
DishwasherAlong the inner door edge or tub frame visible with the door fully open.
Oven or rangeAround the oven door frame, inside a storage or warming drawer area, or on an accessible frame edge; surfaces must be cool.

What to do when the label is hidden or worn

Check the owner manual, original purchase record, or a clear photo from a previous service visit. Some smart-appliance apps and display menus also list model information, but confirm that it matches the appliance rather than an account placeholder.

If the only remaining label requires moving the appliance or removing a panel, stop. Tell the technician what you can see and provide the brand, approximate configuration, and photos of the appliance and control panel.

Use the model information for a better service conversation

Share the full model and serial when booking or have the photo ready for the appointment. Pair it with the exact symptom and any error code. This combination is more useful than a broad description such as “Samsung fridge” or “Bosch dishwasher.”

Model information supports parts research, but it does not by itself identify the failed part. Diagnosis still matters because different failures can produce the same symptom, and superseded part numbers may need verification.
